The night is warm and still. The smell of fire is in the air.

Adam opens his eyes into darkness, his face buried deep in the moist earth. He struggles to gain consciousness. His tongue feels dry, like smoke.

He knows he has been here many times before.

Fight this.

The voice is back. He inhales the damp air as he sits up. In front of him, close enough to touch, is a giant snake- its icy green eyes regarding him with a reptilian intensity. It curves its body upward remaining stationary, poised for Adam’s next move. Adam is not the least bit afraid.

Don't give in.

The green-eyed beast flicks its tongue out and lazily lunges at him, missing purposely, and slithers away.

He has no idea who he is or what he is. He does not know his name. He scans the trees and foliage surrounding him for any aspect- any object that he might recognize- any sign that could make sense of this strange world.

Fight this sweetie.

And what the hell is that supposed to mean?

In the distance, above the hills, a jagged bolt of light pierces the night sky. A rolling wave of thunder shakes the earth beneath him. The wind swirls around in an ominous dance as if the night is trying to come back to life and he is its sole source of power.

Adam gets to his feet and sways dizzily. His legs buckle a little and a familiar weight pushes down on his back.

The brilliance of the starry sky fades as a dark malignant cloud takes shape. Rain begins to fall in torrents. Adam stands taller then he can remember, surrounded by a tempest of lightning and thunder. The turbulence sucks up all the breathable air.

Deep in the back of his throat a molten heat rises up. The taste of sulfur. Adam opens his mouth. Out spews a surge of fire. He twists his neck to release the vapors.

Sounds of life from far off places plead to him in pain.

A crackling surges through his ears and a vast weight like heavy canvas sails seizes him. His shadow appears on the ground. He watches as immense dark wings spread out from behind his back. Rain flows in shiny rivulets down his gleaming leathery chest.

Creaking outward his wings expand another ten feet. He takes one long stride forward, raises a knee and with a grand unfolding and unfurling of his wings lifts off the ground and ascends into the dark, starless hell of night.

His wings flap in a delirious fury as he savors the wonderful taste of blood and fire in his gut. It is comforting to hear the voices, the cries of desperation and torment- all those souls who shriek in fear at his coming.
